First, wait for the email from TAP. This email will likely include all the necessary information, like when the next available flight is and how to get a full refund if you don’t want to take that new flight.
But what if you find out about the cancellation at the airport at the last minute? Unfortunately, not much can be done. Wait for an announcement from the airline. Usually, you will be given a choice between a new flight or a full refund. Usually in these situations people take the next available flight which can be either with TAP or another airline. If TAP offers their flight which is hours away, you are entitled to request an earlier flight with another airline.
While you wait for that flight, you are entitled to care.
Right to care is:
- Free meals, drinks and communication options after 3 hours of waiting;
- Free hotel stay during the night.
Also, know that you might be entitled to flight cancellation compensation, but only if the flight is cancelled 2 weeks or less before the departure date and it’s the airline’s fault.
What if you need to catch another flight on time? If it’s a TAP connecting flight, there’s no need to worry. If you miss your connection because your previous flight was delayed or cancelled, TAP will rebook you on another flight at no extra cost.
However, if it’s a self-transfer with separately booked flights, you’ll need to handle it yourself. Airlines are not required to assist passengers on self-transfer flights.

What to do if your TAP flight is cancelled? Wait for the airline’s announcement at the airport or via email. You will have a choice of a new flight or a full refund. If you’re at the airport, you are entitled to care while waiting for your new flight.
Get Flight Cancellation Compensation – EU Regulation 261/2004
You can get flight cancellation compensation if the cancellation is because of TAP Airline’s fault.
The EU Regulation 261/2004 states that you are eligible for compensation if the following conditions are met:
- Cancellation must be TAP’s fault.
- The flight cancellation must occur last minute, within 14 days of the departure date.
Take note: The compensation amount depends on the flight distance. You may receive up to €600 per person.

Refund for a Cancelled Flight or Flight Compensation? Or Both?
In certain situations, you can receive both a refund and compensation.
Here’s an explanation of when and what you can get.
- Flight is cancelled 2 weeks or less before the trip: you can get a refund or a new flight + flight cancellation compensation (if cancellation is TAP’s fault). Whether you opt for a refund or accept a new flight, you’re still eligible for cancellation compensation.
- Flight is cancelled more than 2 weeks before the trip: you can get either a refund or a new flight.
The refund should be sent to your bank account within 7 days.
You are not required to accept vouchers. Compensation must be in monetary form, too.
Flight Cancellation Due to Extraordinary Circumstances. Can You Still Get a Refund?
Yes. Even if the flight cancellation is due to extraordinary circumstances, like bad weather or air traffic control strikes, you still have the right to request a full refund. If you don’t want a refund, you can request a new flight.
However, please note that if your flight is cancelled due to extraordinary circumstances, you won’t get flight cancellation compensation as these events are beyond the airline’s control.
